Proudly Zimbabwean foundation in partnership with Edgars, Swift and KPMG on Friday hosted Trashion Show 2013, a fashion show aimed at creating awareness on how litter can be commercialized to avoid irreversible damage to the environment.
Speaking at the show Proudly Zimbabwean chairman Dr. Joseph Kanyekanye said this initiative was set to grow bigger and attract a larger audience in order to increase awareness as there is no going back once the environment has been damaged.
In a speech read on his behalf by his deputy, Minister of Environment, Climate and water Honourable Saviour Kasukuwere spoke on the tremendous effect litter is posing to our environment with estimates of 2 million tonnes of waste both domestic and industrial being generated yearly.
Kasukuwere highlighted the need for each and every individual to play a part in waste recycling if the world is to achieve sustainable results , ‘’The only requirement to success is dreaming , but let us dream in action” he said.
He commended the efforts of the designers on showing how recycled waste can be turned into beautiful garments as highlighted by the showcased designs made up of bits and pieces of glass, sawdust, paper, tissues and grass.
All of the designers who took part were young people showing a bright future in terms of environmental preservation awareness , among them were young ladies some as young as 17 joining in the noble cause of nature preservation, punctuated by lively music from local singer Dereck Mpofu who performed educational songs on environmental conservation.
The show turned out to be a huge success with 25 year old Blessed Nkosi of the White Cotton label going home all smiles after clinching 2nd place while 20 year old Mufaro Mukoki scooped the first prize .
