Harare, Zimbabwe (News of the South)-Facebook will soon be able to spot suicidal members through the use of its artificial intelligence according to a recent media report.

The social media company said it has developed algorithms that have the ability to spot members who are likely to kill themselves through checking the user’s posts and the replies of their friends.

According to the media report after confirmation by its Human Review Team the company will then contact the member thought to be at risk of suicide and offer ways through which to seek assistance.

The system, which is currently being tested in the US, marks the first use of AI ro reviw messages on the social application.

Already Facebook has partnered with some US mental health institutions to allow those in need of assistance contact them through its Messenger application.

Previously Facebook has offered advice to those thought to be at risk of suicide but it relied on others to contact it with information before its development of pattern-recognition algorithms which recognise if someone is struggling.

This move by Facebook follows the tragic suicide of a Miami 14 year old girl who used Facebook Live to livestream her suicide in January.
