LONDON, UK – The widow of legendary former Zimbabwe Warriors coach Reinhard Fabisch, Chawada Fabisch, was among supporters at The Valley in Charlton, London, as Zimbabwe took on Nigeria’s Super Eagles in the ongoing Unity Cup tournament.
Adding emotion to the occasion was the presence of her son, Jonah Fabisch, who featured for the Warriors in midfield during the match. The Kenyan -born Zimbabwe international delivered a composed performance in the centre of the park, impressing many Zimbabwean supporters with his calm passing, positional discipline and determination against a strong Nigerian side. Online reactions from fans praised the midfielder for showing maturity and composure throughout the game despite Zimbabwe’s defeat.
Mrs Fabisch attended the match in support of both the Warriors and her son, continuing a strong connection to Zimbabwean football established by her late husband, who remains one of the country’s most admired football figures.
Reinhard Fabisch coached Zimbabwe between 1992 and 1995 and is widely credited for building the famous “Dream Team” era of the Warriors. Under his leadership, Zimbabwe played exciting attacking football and came agonisingly close to qualifying for the 1994 FIFA World Cup, narrowly missing out after a decisive final qualifier against Cameroon. He coached stars including Bruce Grobbelaar and Peter Ndlovu and transformed the Warriors into one of Africa’s most respected national teams.
Fabisch died in Germany in 2008 after battling cancer, but his football legacy continues to resonate among Zimbabwean supporters. That legacy is now being carried forward by his son Jonah, whose performance at the Unity Cup reminded fans of the Fabisch family’s enduring bond with Zimbabwean football.
Zimbabwe will return to action on Saturday at The Valley when they face India in the third-place playoff at 2pm. Nigeria will play Jamaica in the final at 19.30hrs GMT
