(South Africa. (News of The South) – The University of South Africa (Unisa) is yet again caught up in another exam leak scandal. Several students who have so far taken their exams have been receiving text messages of details of their exam papers even before they have taken the exam.
The text messages include the module, the price, and the place where the student will be expected to meet and collect the exam paper.
Question papers start from R500 (approximately US$33). Students have been wondering how these dubious people get to acquire their academic information as well as their phone numbers.
Earlier on in June there was another similar incident but they were no reported incidents of the culprits being prosecuted nor the students that bought the exams.
Unisa’s spokesperson Martin Ramotshela could not be reached for comment but prior to this incident he said, “in the process of marking, should the investigation find that a student may have had access to the exam papers prior, modules will be cancelled and marks will be taken away and the students will face a disciplinary hearing.
We want to emphasis as a university that even if it was one exam paper, it is one too many. And we would still be treating it with the same seriousness.”
Unisa also issued out a statement earlier on saying, “the university still appeals to students with information on the leaking of examination question papers to report such to the Fraud/Corruption Hotline on telephone number 0800 203 785 or e-mail: Unisa@whistleblower.co.za.”
