The group B netball game between England and Australia saw England fall to Australia 49 – 48 at the Scottish Exhibition and Conference centre on Friday.

On Wednesday England won the game against Wales.

The Australians started the better with goal attack Tegan Caldwell missing two opportunities to notch the opening goal. Caitlin Bassett, the Aussie goal shooter, was to show her exactly how it was done by giving her team the lead.

England levelled courtesy of their own goal shooter, Joanne Harten, which seemed to lift the team and the crowd.

England is being coached by Anna Mayes.

Their handling, athleticism and shooting was on point and the women from Down Under just could not handle them. Mayes’ team were in the ascendancy after the first quarter with a 16-10 lead.

The second period saw the Aussies fight back and ended 27-26.

England`s goal keeper Geva mentor played a major role in defence, centre Serena Guthrie worked very hard together with sharp shooter Harten.

The gutsy Australians battled like Trojans in the final quarter and with just nine minutes to go gained parity when they made the score 42 – 42.

They were the more clinical side in the dying moments and managed to eke out a win that for long periods looked highly unlikely.
