Trent Bridge, Nottingham (News of The South) – England continued their relentless dominance over Zimbabwe on Day Two of the one-off Test at Trent Bridge, declaring their first innings on a colossal 565 for 6. This declaration sets up a formidable challenge for the Zimbabwean side, who ended the day yet to open their account.
Resuming on their overnight score of 498 for 3, England’s batters continued to pile on the runs in the morning session. Ollie Pope, who had impressed on Day One, was eventually dismissed for 171 early in the day. However, a brisk fifty from Harry Brook ensured England’s scoreboard kept ticking over at a rapid rate. Brook’s aggressive knock of 58 ultimately led to Ben Stokes’ decision to declare the innings. Blessing Muzarabani was the most successful bowler for Zimbabwe, picking up three wickets.
Zimbabwe’s reply began with a significant deficit, and they faced a challenging period against a fresh England bowling attack. Debutant Sam Cook was handed the new ball, a moment eagerly anticipated by England fans. At the close of play, Zimbabwe had yet to score, facing only a handful of deliveries before stumps were called.
Day One had been a record-breaking affair for England, with Zak Crawley (124), Ben Duckett (140), and Ollie Pope (169*) all scoring centuries, marking only the fourth time in Test history that England’s top three have all registered hundreds in the same innings. Joe Root also reached a personal milestone, becoming the fifth batter in Test history to pass 13,000 runs during his innings.
With England having put up such a commanding total, the pressure is firmly on Zimbabwe to bat long and salvage something from this match. The Trent Bridge pitch has largely favored the batters thus far, but England’s bowlers will be looking to extract more from it as the game progresses.
The four-day Test marks Zimbabwe’s first Test match in England in 22 years, and they will be hoping to show more resilience in their batting innings on Day Three to avoid a heavy defeat. Its lovely to see Zimbabwean supporters cheering the team in Zimbabwe flag colours singing and dancing, more supporters are expected to visit Trent bridge this weekend.
