Nottingham, England(News of The South) – In a historic moment for international cricket, England and Zimbabwe have commenced their one-off four-day Test match at Trent Bridge today, Thursday, May 22, 2025, marking the end of a 22-year hiatus in bilateral Test cricket between the two nations.

Zimbabwe won the toss and elected to bowl first under overcast skies in Nottingham. This Test match signifies a renewal of cricket relations between England and Zimbabwe, with their last bilateral Test series taking place in 2003.

Debutants and Returning Players
England has handed a Test debut to Essex fast bowler Sam Cook. He forms part of a relatively inexperienced pace attack alongside Josh Tongue, who returns to the Test side for the first time since 2023, and Gus Atkinson. Captain Ben Stokes is also back in the lineup after recovering from a hamstring injury. Shoaib Bashir will be the frontline spin option for England.

Zimbabwe’s playing XI includes the experienced all-rounder Sikandar Raza, who will also provide a spin option. The pace attack includes Blessing Muzarabani, Richard Ngarava, Tanaka Chivanga, and Victor Nyauchi.

Match Situation
As of the latest updates, England has made a steady start to their innings.
England: 60/0 after 12 overs.
Zak Crawley: 22 not out
Ben Duckett: 37 not out

Zimbabwe’s opening bowlers, Richard Ngarava and Blessing Muzarabani, have bowled steadily but are yet to make a breakthrough.
Historical Context and Future Implications
This one-off Test is a significant occasion, being Zimbabwe’s first Test match in England since 2003. The revival of bilateral ties follows administrative reforms within Zimbabwe Cricket and discussions between the cricket boards of both nations.

For England, this match serves as preparation for their upcoming five-match Test series against India next month and later the Ashes series in Australia. It also provides an opportunity to integrate new players into the Test setup.

Zimbabwe will be looking to build on their recent Test victory against Bangladesh and make a positive impression in their return to Test cricket against England.

Four-Day Test Dynamics
This match is being played as a four-day Test, a format that has been trialed in recent years. To compensate for the shorter duration, the number of overs per day is increased to a maximum of 98, compared to the usual 90 in a five-day Test.

Cricket fans will be keenly following the progress of this historic Test match at Trent Bridge.
