Zimbabwe. (News of The South) – Zimbabwe’s mobile telecommunications and banking giant Econet Wreless has rewarded a team of surgeons who last month successfully carried out a surgical operation to detach Siamese twins, the University of Zimbabwe (UZ) revealed at the weekend.

The twins shared one liver and were conjoined at the chest and abdomen and their effective separation was seen as a laudable feat for the country’s neglected healthcare professionals.

“The award being presented to our members and the entire team is a well thought recognition of that achievement. We cherish Econet’s continued support to healthcare delivery in Zimbabwe,” according to a speech read on behalf of the University of Zimbabwe Vice Chancellor, Professor Levi Nyagura, during a ceremony to celebrate the historic achievement at the institution.

“Through their [Econet] innovative assistance and partnership packages, we have been able to grow from strength to strength and making positive changes to the healthcare landscape of Zimbabwe,” said Nyagura.

Nyagura explained that the team showed “unparrelled leadership” and hence the entire UZ community was beaming with pride and confidence as a result.

Bothwell Mbuwayesango, the lead surgeon, and other medical experts that were involved in the operation are part the UZ’s College of Health Sciences (CHS) academic staff.

“We at the National Healthcare Trust, Higher Life Foundation and Econet Wireless say to you today once again well done, for the success of the Department of Surgery and the team of dedicated men and women they worked with on this procedure,” said Fidelia Gandiya, Chief Executive Officer of the Higher Life Foundation, Econet’s corporate social investments arm.

She added:”We take great pleasure to be part of this success story and believe this the beginning of many more such milestones.”

Econet has supported the UZ’s College of Health Sciences with teaching and learning aids and ICT equipment to “enhance the technology services of the College.”
