One of the Mbari ancestors, aunty (tete) named Vanyerere as a (Mbonga), someone who is not allowed to get married or have children, in her that where the power of the Kingdom was vested. In every clan there is a woman who does not get married or bear children, she has her special role which she plays, she looks after the spirituality of the Kingdom. The daughters in law (varoora) mocked her saying she didn’t bear any children and all she did was look after other people’s children. This upset her so much that she disappeared with the children she was looking after. She went to the stream with them, after some time when people failed to see her and the children they followed to the stream and found her sitting on top of the water in the stream with the children (It’s important to note how she managed to sit on top of the water) Only spiritual people or people with special powers can sit on top of the water.
As the people got closer to her by the stream she began going down in the water with the children and she and the children disappeared under the water. From that time the stream was called Dzivarasekwa and that’s how the name Dzivarasekwa came into existence till today. We hear media reports and stories in the community about how people go in the Dzivarasekwa waters for swimming and baptism then are dragged down under water and are never seen again. So what we clearly see from this shared information from my clan history it is not mermaids who case disappearance of people from Dzivarasekwa waters. It is caused by the spirituality of the river. This is all connected to the Mbari Ancestor the aunty called Vanyerere. In normal circumstances when such incidents happen one would need to consult the Mbari clan who can do the required traditional ceremonies so the missing people can be returned. This is not possible because at the moment and since colonialism there has never been a Chief Mbari to take care of the traditional administration of Harare and such incidents go unresolved and no one can provide answers. King Mbari was a powerful King Spiritually and physically, his power lives on till today. It’s just the same kind of situation that happens at other spiritual areas around Zimbabwe.
In Mount Nyanagni in Nyanga similar occurrences also take place, I will single out the disappearance of the Masaya twins who disappeared many years ago, in 1981 to be precise. Many other people disappear if they fail to respect traditional laws of Mount Nyangani. The Chief in the area would have to be consulted if the missing people are ever to be returned. The Masaya twins were daughters of a former Zimbabwean government Minister Tichaendepi Masaya. According to the manyika people who live in the area a vindictive spirit that lives in the area is said to be responsible for the mysterious disappearances. Some people do not believe African Spiritism exists so they go to sacred areas and fail to observe spiritual laws then they are unfortunate to become victims. Harare Sacredness has not been publicly talked about, the Mbari clan who are my clan people have not done much in terms of educating people about our history this is one of the main reasons. I have the mandate to talk about our history and enlighten Zimbabweans. The parents sought spiritual guidance and were told the children were in a state called “chimidza” till today they haven’t returned. Five years after the disappearance of the Masaya twins another 8 year old boy named Robert Ackhurst also mysteriously disappeared. Mount Nyangani is the highest mountain and stands at 2 592 metres (8 504 feet).
When one is in a sacred area and they see anything mysterious or something they have never seen such as strange colourful snakes or pot of clay smouldering with smoke, mysterious animals or creatures or even a bar of gold they should move on and pretend they haven’t seen anything, they should not point or comment on what they are seeing. These kind of things happen at Chinhoi caves and other areas. Zimbabwe is a spiritual country and spiritualism of Zimbabwe did not start today it has been in existence from old time immemorial. An Asian man Zayd Dada disappeared at the age of 32 while hiking with friends and his family at Mount Nyangani, a worldwide search for him using the latest technology and search experts yielded nothing. Zayd Dada disappeared in 2014. Some Zimbabweans have previously argued that only Africans who are connected with spiritualism of Zimbabwe because of their origins can disappear but evidence from history suggests otherwise, the sacredness of an area affects everyone who ventures into the territory.
Zimbabwean government can confirm the spirituality of Dzivarasekwa if they can narrate the story on how they experienced problems to build the Dzivarasekwa army barracks. It is unfortunate these mysterious events were not publicised otherwise the whole nation would know and appreciate the spirituality of Harare. An attempt to build the barracks was done 7 times with each time the built structures being found demolished the next morning, Zimbabwean government then hired security to watch over the built structures but the next morning the security reported the structures demolished but they did not see or hear anyone demolish them. It then forced the government to seek the owners of the land the Mbari clan to be summoned to come and resolve spiritual issues.
At that time the barracks were being built by Chinese. Every time they dug up the ground they found large snakes, the Chinese thought they had struck the mines of delicacy and wanted to eat the snakes until they were told to stay clear of eating the snakes as they are spiritual eating them would cause serious problems. The Mbari clan members then did traditional ceremony to communicate with the Ancestors and asked on behalf of the government for permission to build on the chosen land. Only after this was done was the Zimbabwean government able to build the barracks. The barracks are situated near the spiritual river I mentioned above. The reason why spiritual activities took place and prevented the building of the barracks in the first place was because in that area were graves belonging to my Ancestors of the Mbari clan. Numerous calls have been made to the Zimbabwean government to resuscitate Harare Kingdom, even Robert Mugabe who amassed huge amounts of land for himself and his family went to his grave without resolving that issue. So yes Mbari clans hands are tied as they cannot to the traditional rites they are required to do on the land of their great Ancestors.
