Kaabong/Kotido- The raging drought in Kenya has forced Turkana leaders to appeal to the Uganda government to allow pastoralists to cross the border and graze their animals in the Karamoja Sub-region.
Mr Emmanuel Imana, the Turkana county peace ambassador, and Mr Samuel Osodo, the Turkana District officer, made the appeal while meeting Kaabong and Kotido District leaders in Kaabong District this week.
Mr Imana said the current drought in Turkana is the worst that the area has experienced in recent years. He said many Turkana pastoralists are likely to lose their livestock.
“Uganda has been on the forefront of rescuing Turkana pastoralists whenever the area faces drought. That’s why we have continued running to Uganda for help,” he said.
Mr Osodo said Uganda last year rescued over 5,000 Turkana pastoralists who were losing their herds to drought.
“We don’t have water and grass. It’s Uganda that always rescues us,” he said.
Kotido Resident District Commissioner Andrew Keem Napaja assured the Turkana leaders that the Uganda government was ready to help them provided they don’t cause insecurity to the local communities.
“Uganda can allow Turkana pastoralists to cross and graze their animals in Karamoja but on condition that they do not cross with their guns,” he said.
