After a 20 month rebellion with the Democratic Republic of Congo government, M23 rebels have declared a ceasefire to give room for peace talks with the government.

“Hostilities with government troops should immediately end,” rebel leader Bertrand Bisimwa urged all fighters.

“We call on the facilitator of the Kampala peace talks to immediately put in place a mechanism to monitor the ceasefire,” Bisimwa said in a statement.

The declaration came after the rebel group was ousted from their last stronghold Bunaguna which led them to flee to the hills around Congo border with Uganda and Rwanda.

According to reports, the government has not responded from the rebel declarations.

The facilitator to the two parties, Uganda has called all parities to stop fighting and arrange for a dialogue.

Congo’s government has dispatched their facilitation team to Uganda but the army is keen to finish the rebellion.
