Many people at their death bed wish a lot of things could have happened to them or at least they should have done a lot of things. They wish they had been more generous, be adventurous, start a charity and many other things. In general people wish they were better than they really were. Some people don’t but many do, and it’s not everyone who gets the chance to ponder over their lives with only a few amounts of breath left in them.
Truth is, sometimes we live with the illusion of time, thinking we have forever to do what we want to do, and in the end we realize we are wrong. We realize that time is finite and in as much as we would have liked, we just can’t control how much time we have on this planet.
But even though time is limited and our commitments are unlimited, waiting for the very end just so you can say ‘I wish I had done this and that’ surely doesn’t help anyone. What’s the point in talking about what you should have done when you had years to do that and didn’t.
Truth is many times we actually know what we want to do in life; we just don’t want to start doing what it is we want to do. It really doesn’t take sickness and a deathbed for us to be reminded what’s important in our lives. We already know that but we ignore it every day. People don’t just happen to think about what they should have done because they are about to die, they have been thinking about those things their entire lives but putting them off for tomorrow.
The human race, despite having fancy timers, the concept of time is something we are yet to grasp. It’s one thing knowing how to tell time, it is another knowing how to use it well.
The concept of waiting till the end is even supported on television on many storylines written especially on the topic of love. The guy waits for the girl to be involved with another guy so that he can run after her and profess his undying and true love for her when he had all the time to do so but didn’t. We are all suckers for happy endings but there aren’t any happy endings. Not when we do like we do, or in this case, don’t do what we are supposed to be doing.
I know death is always a wakeup call to everyone. We are reminded where we are all headed toward. One day it will be us, lying lifeless in a coffin. Don’t let death or the fear of dying be the alarm clock that wakes you up from deep slumber of things that you wanted to do but didn’t do. And even when death reminds us of our coming demise, when the alarm clock goes off, some people still want to hit the snooze button and sleep some more.
So don’t wait till you don’t have time left and no enough energy in you to think about what you want to do. Don’t wait for it to be too late for you to go back and do it all over again. Because we don’t have forever, and if something can be done today, then there is no reason for postponing it for tomorrow. Do what you want to do today, you may not have tomorrow. After all, tomorrow is not promised, and it may be too late for you.
Think long and hard about the things you have been putting off in your life. Are they really important to you, because if they are, then they deserve to be done? Go places you wanted to go, start that company you wanted to start, give to the poor, have more time with your loved ones, don’t wait for sickness to scare you off to thinking about the goodness of life, because you already know what is good.
