Malawi (News of The South) – Continued demonstrations in the country are said to be affecting businesses mainly those in the hospitality sector.
This complaint was raised by the Operations Manager and the Assistant General Manager of Grand Palace Hotel, Sam Phiri during the mini football bonanza which the hotel organised as one way of interacting with communities around the hotel.
Phiri said, much as he is aware that demonstration is one of the fundamental rights enshrined in the constitution, it is very much important for people to find a solution if businesses such like those of hospitality have to be sustained.
“Demonstrations are people’s right but we also appreciate that there are some bad things happening, some people are taking advantage of the situation and woo young people to cause trouble, as a business we want peace,” Phiri said.
One of the residents of Hilltop Township who is also the team manager for Hilltop United Football Club, Evance Phiri thanked the management of the hotel for coming up with the football bonanza and he was quick to point out that the youth are exploited in various forms hence involved in violent activities.
“Let me thank the hotel for coming up with such initiatives, as you know the youth have nothing to do and that is why they are involved in various violent acts like demonstrations, but with these games am sure they will be busy now,” Phiri said.
During the mini football bonanza, Chibabvi United were crowned champions after beating Hilltop United by three goals to one.
During the presentation of third monetary press statement some few weeks ago the Reserve Bank of Malawi (RBM) Governor Dalitso Kabambe told the nation that the country’s economy can be affected if the political environment remains tense, which in most cases affect both small and medium scale investments.
