Zimbabwean students have been urged to define their own destiny through their chosen courses that take at technical institutions so as sharpen the society they come from and their future.
Addressing students at Mutare Polytechnic College 17th Enterprise Development graduation ceremony, Acting Vice Chancellor of Harare Institute of Technology Engineer Quinton Kanhukamwe said the graduation ceremony was a milestone that does not mean the end of the road but rather signifies the end of one stretch and the beginning of another.
‘Many will be confronted with profound choices that will determine their future role in the society and their contribution to the development of Zimbabwe, its people and economy.
Mutare Polytechnic College has imparted you with skills and knowledge that will enable you to play an important role in shaping your society and improving the Zimbabwean economy,” said Eng. Kanhukamwe.
He said the theme of the 17th Enterprise Development graduation “Economic empowerment and growth through TVET-sation was apt in that it captured and embraced the government’s thrust towards economic empowerment.
He added that TVET-sation complements government’s developmental agenda it articulates in the economic blue print ZIMASSET.
Engineer Kanhukamwe reiterated that technical and vocational training colleges need to impart skills of empowerment and entrepreneurship to students and commended the Ministry of Higher Education, Tertiary and Science Technology for implementing programs that improve the living standards of ordinary Zimbabweans.
“Government expects polytechnics and vocational training centres to impart graduates with skills that create self-dependence as much as they inculcate the spirit and ethos of entrepreneurship.
In Zimbabwe the operalisation of the concept of TVET has become a vital model of education delivery in tertiary institutions to mitigate poverty through enhancement of employment creation.
This endeavour to integrate work place based learning and training into the vocational education curriculum equips students with relevant knowledge and skills necessary for them to run their own businesses and running them efficiently”.
He added that government recognises the critical role of private sector in the provision of the country’s public infrastructure.
About 436 graduates were handed with certificates in short courses such as carpentry, Motor Mechanics, Metal work, Brick-laying, Agriculture among others courses which were a preserve for males now having females breaking down the gender based biases in an effort to achieve gender parity in all spheres of life.
