Dead Russian satellite and discarded Chinese rocket at very high risk of colliding

Russia’s out of commission satellite and a discarded Chinese rocket that are floating more than 600 miles above Earth had a high risk of collision last night.

By Karen Mhlanga

LeoLabs a firm that tracks space debris revealed that the two will pass less than 82 feet apart and have a 20% chance of collision.

Although there is no risk being posed on earth, it poses a great threat on functioning satellites in the orbit.

“This event continues to be very high risk and will likely stay this way through the time of closest approach,” said LeoLabs.

Russia is said to have contributed to most of the space junk floating in the orbit.

The space junk can destroy satellites and spacecraft while a NASA scientist fears that it will eventually create the Kessler syndrome.

The Kessler syndrome is where the density of the objects in low earth orbit could increase to a point where it is dangerous for humans to leave earth.
