London. – UK shadow minister for women and equality Dawn Butler, MP confirmed as special guest and keynote speaker at Divas of Colour awards and conference 2018.

London, 27/02/2018 – The Shadow Minister for women and equality, Dawn Butler,MP has been confirmed to attend this years Divas of Colour International Women’s Awards and conference dinner.

MP, Dawn Butler was elected as the Member of Parliament for Brent South on 5 May 2005, making history as the first elected African-Caribbean woman to become a Government Minister in the UK. Dawn’s maiden speech described her constituency as a “shining example of integration at its best”.

Ms Butler was born to immigrants from Jamaica, and is one of six children. She worked on a market stall and in a bakery in her youth but started her career as a computer programmer/systems analyst and then working as a trade unionist. Her desire to enter politics came from a deep rooted commitment to address inequality.

In 2015, she ran a hugely successful campaign and won Brent Central with a majority of nearly 20,000 – giving the largest vote swing in Britain at that election. She was again successful in the 2017 election, winning 73.1% of the votes.

Dawn continues to commit her time in parliament to representing groups and people in society that are often underrepresented. In 2017 Dawn became the first MP in its history to sign a question in the House of Commons using British Sign Language. Dawn used sign language in her question to highlight the need to give the language full legal status. Dawn continues to run successful campaigns on Employment Tribunal Fees and is now pushing for the Government to publish full equality impact assessments on their policies.

She is currently serving as the Shadow Minister for Women and Equalities.

Faustina Anyanwu, Co-founder and CEO of Divas of Colour said, “We are hugely excited and grateful to have Dawn Butler’s support this year. As an immigrant woman who is doing her little best to bring to the fore the contributions of women like me, and to have another successful woman hold you by the hand, means alot to us and the vision we have for Divas of Colour.

When we launched the first festival in 2014, it was like a joke. But today, all the hard work, the sleepless nights and the struggle to convince high profile women to support our vision as finally paid off. Dawn has always been a great figure I look up to and admire and I know that her presence with us will be a huge inspiration to the many women who will be showcasing their businesses, speaking and receiving awards on the night.”

Each year, Divas of Colour festival chooses a cause that affects their target group particularly to highlight and raise awareness on. And this year, the focus has been on Mental Health which is tagged – #MindYourMind.

Dawn Butler will use this opportunity to not only highlight the importance of equality and fairness but will also speak on how inequality adversely affects the mental wellbeing of women in general and specifically women from minority ethnic groups. She will also be recognised with the Women of Honour recognition at the event.

Divas of Colour international women’s festival 2018 which is sponsored by Worldremit and Lycamobile will see hundreds of women from around the globe in London for the 2 day event to celebrate their achievements, showcase and exhibit their businesses and have the opportunity to meet their national and international icons.
