Twenty six years ago I embarked on my journey to becoming a registered nurse. After completion of my Associate degree, I had no desire to subject myself to the labor intensive, time consuming endeavor of advancing any further. I was, after all, a registered nurse. This is the title and degree that sustained me for most of my career. It wasn’t until 2013 that I decided greater was within reach. I enrolled in a few courses here and there but just couldn’t seem to will myself to give it my all. Three years later I decided to get serious. I had seen enough of less than optimal patient health outcomes, subpar patient education by providers, a health system that promotes a false narrative of how recipients of governmental healthcare abuse the system.
When in fact the abuse and misuse often starts at the source. In 2016, I began a full course load, while working full time to obtain my Baccalaureate degree. As much of an accomplishment this was, I immediately began to pursue my master’s. This summer I achieved that goal and have already passed the national certification exam and become an advanced practice registered nurse, specializing in family. Now it’s time to advocate like only a provider can. And that is exactly what I intend to do. Never give up. Run until you’re finished.
