News from the COP26 Unit
February has been another busy month for the COP26 team, with the COP26 President Designate visiting Egypt, Nigeria, India and Nepal to to drive forward climate priorities in Africa and Asia. Particular highlights from these included:
In Egypt and Nigeria, encouraging leaders to set out net zero targets and ambitious plans to decarbonise their economies by 2030, and meeting with activists and entrepreneurs in both countries to discuss exciting innovations in climate action.
Visiting Asia for the first time as COP26 President Designate, where he welcomed India’s significant progress on climate action and clean energy transition. He met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, senior Indian Ministers, as well as leaders from business and civil society, to discuss strengthening the UK-India climate partnership ahead of COP26.
Finally, he visited Nepal where he met with climate champions, civil society and government representatives including Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, as well as travelling to Jomsom in the Hindu Kush Himalaya region (picture below) to see the effects of climate change first hand and hear from local communities.
Alongside this international travel, the COP26 President Designate also briefed UN Member States on 8 February on his priorities for COP26.
On 2 February, he also launched the Forests, Agriculture and Commodity Trade Dialogue. The dialogue aims to bring together key countries exporting agricultural products and the countries consuming these products to discuss how to make this process greener and more sustainable. In partnership with the Tropical Forest Alliance, a Multi-Stakeholder Consultation process was launched.
On the same day, the Prime Minister also attended the launch of the Dasgupta Review on the Economics of Biodiversity.
