Constitutional Amendments Undermine Democracy in Zimbabwe
By Dr MASIMBA Mavaza
Proposed changes to Zimbabwe’s constitution threaten to erode democratic principles and consolidate power, sparking concerns about the country’s governance future. The Extended Terms: are akin to A Power Grab?
Increasing presidential and parliamentary terms from 5 to 7 years reduces accountability and allows leaders to entrench themselves. Limits opportunities for new voices and ideas, stifling democratic renewal.
Electoral Reforms Are a Threat to Transparency.
Shifting voter registration to the Registrar-General raises concerns about manipulation and reduced oversight. Zimbabwe does not need this drama now.
The Delimitation Commission’s role in boundary setting may lead to gerrymandering.
Concentrating Power Allowing the President to appoint 10 additional senators increases executive influence over the legislature and compromises free operation of the legislature. Supreme Court judge-level qualifications for the Attorney-General may politicize the role and compromises the quality of advice given to the government. Undermining Accountability*
Changes to the Defence Forces’ mandate could expand military involvement in governance.
Dissolving the Zimbabwe Gender Commission may weaken gender-specific advocacy. Yes Zimbabwe has always advocated for women rights but the abolition of this commission is a disaster in itself.
It will the darkest day in the history of Zimbabwe’s democracy. It is A Blow to Democracy. These amendments risk consolidating power, reducing checks, and eroding democratic norms. Zimbabweans and international observers should scrutinize these changes to ensure the country’s democratic trajectory isn’t compromised.
