Constantino Chiwenga today delivered Zimbabwe’s address at the 13th Session of the World Urban Forum in Baku, Azerbaijan, where global leaders, policymakers and urban development experts gathered to discuss sustainable cities and housing solutions.

Representing President Emmerson Mnangagwa, Vice President Chiwenga addressed delegates at the United Nations-backed forum, which is focused on tackling rapid urbanisation and promoting resilient, inclusive and sustainable human settlements. The gathering, hosted in Azerbaijan’s capital, has attracted more than 40,000 participants from 182 countries.

In his speech, Chiwenga highlighted Zimbabwe’s efforts to expand housing delivery and improve urban infrastructure, underscoring the Government’s commitment to providing affordable and sustainable housing for citizens as part of the country’s Vision 2030 development agenda. He emphasized the importance of structured urban planning, investment in resilient communities, and international cooperation to address urban challenges.

The forum, running from May 17 to May 22 under the theme “Housing the World: Safe and Resilient Cities and Communities,” is organised by the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) in partnership with the Government of Azerbaijan. Discussions are centred on housing affordability, climate resilience, smart urban planning and sustainable infrastructure in the face of growing urban populations worldwide.

Zimbabwe’s participation at the forum comes at a time when many African countries are grappling with rapid urban expansion, increased housing demand and the need for modern infrastructure. Chiwenga’s engagement at the global platform signals Zimbabwe’s intention to position itself within international conversations on urban transformation and sustainable development.

Before the forum, Chiwenga arrived in Baku on Sunday and was received by Zimbabwean diplomatic officials and Azerbaijani government representatives. He attended opening proceedings before delivering Zimbabwe’s address today.
