Birmingham, UK ( News of The South) – The UK is set to host a historic and emotional night of Zimbabwean music as the legendary Thomas “Mukanya” Mapfumo performs his grand finale show on Saturday, August 23, 2025, at the New Bingley Hall. The concert, which marks the end of a touring career spanning over five decades, is a celebration of Mapfumo’s monumental impact on Zimbabwe’s cultural and political landscape.
Known affectionately as “The Lion of Zimbabwe,” Mapfumo is credited with creating the Chimurenga music genre, a powerful and politically charged sound that became the soundtrack of the country’s struggle for independence. His music, characterized by the fusion of traditional Shona mbira melodies with modern electric guitar and rock instrumentation, gave voice to the liberation movement. Mapfumo’s songs were so influential that the Rhodesian government banned them from state-controlled radio and even incarcerated him for a period.
Following independence in 1980, Mapfumo’s international career flourished, and he continued to use his platform to address social and political issues in Zimbabwe, earning him a reputation as a fearless advocate for justice. His rich musical journey has seen him perform on countless international stages and collaborate with global artists. One of the most iconic moments of his career was sharing the stage with reggae icon Bob Marley at Zimbabwe’s independence celebrations. His decision to move into self-exile in the United States in the early 2000s cemented his status as a principled critic of the government.
The finale show is poised to be a star-studded affair, with Mapfumo sharing the stage with a new generation of talented Zimbabwean artists who have made their own marks in the music industry.
Tocky Vibes
One of the featured performers is the award-winning Zimdancehall artist, Tocky Vibes. Born Obey Makamure, Tocky Vibes has distinguished himself with his deeply lyrical and socially conscious music. Known for hits like “Mhai” and “Tocky Aenda Nenyika,” he has successfully blended dancehall, reggae, and Afro-pop with spiritual and poetic themes. His unique style, which often involves using live bands and crafting his own riddims, has earned him multiple accolades, including the Zimdancehall Awards for Best Male Artist and Song of the Year. His music resonates with a wide audience, cementing his status as one of Zimbabwe’s most respected artists.
Lindsay Chamangura
Also joining the lineup is the musician Lindsay Chamangura. With a growing presence in the Zimbabwean music scene, Chamangura is known for his soulful sound and a collection of singles that have been gaining traction. He has released popular tracks such as “Wenhamo,” “Mwari Chengetai,” and “Gore Rapera,” showcasing his artistry and musical talent. His performance at this major event provides an opportunity for him to reach a broader audience and further establish his career.
Kurai Makore
Completing the lineup is Kurai Makore, a rising star and a direct protégé of Thomas Mapfumo. As Mapfumo’s nephew, Kurai has been publicly endorsed by the Chimurenga legend as the future custodian of the genre. Kurai has taken on this legacy with his band, the Black Lions, and is dedicated to preserving and evolving the Chimurenga sound. His albums, including “Garaunzwe” and “Ngoma Kurira,” reflect his commitment to upholding the family’s musical heritage while carving his own path. His presence at the finale is a symbolic passing of the torch, ensuring that the Chimurenga legacy continues for generations to come.
The concert promises to be more than just a musical event; it is a momentous occasion celebrating the life and career of a national hero and showcasing the vibrant future of Zimbabwean music. Fans are expected to travel from across the UK to witness this final, unforgettable performance by one of Africa’s most revered musicians.
