Chief Murinye Cleared: Mutangira’s Accusations Baseless and Misleading
By Dr Masimba Mavaza
Chief Murinye, a respected traditional leader, has been unfairly maligned by Riverton School owner Mutangira, who has made false accusations against him. The facts are clear: Chief Murinye’s children have completed their education, holding degrees, and were supported by their father’s own means – not through corruption or favours from Mutangira.
As a successful businessman and farmer, Chief Murinye has built his wealth through hard work, not graft. It’s customary in Shona culture for subjects to offer services to their chief, known as “Zunde ramambo” – Mutangira’s “donation” of electricity to the chief’s homestead was simply a gesture of respect, not a quid pro quo. Mutangira then wants to abuse a custom and turn it into a bribe. He expected his customary dues to earn him absolvance from laws and regulations. He believed that he will be untouchable for performing his Zinde rights. He was shocked to realise that chief Murinye could not be bribed and he stood his grounds despite the fact that Mutangira had paid his due as a subject.
Mutangira’s statements are a blatant attempt to vilify Chief Murinye and undermine his authority. His use of vulgar language against the chief is unacceptable and brings traditional leaders into disrepute. The Traditional Council of Chiefs must take action to protect Chief Murinye’s dignity and reputation and to protect other Chiefs. If no action is taken Chiefs will become subjects of those with money.
Furthermore, allegations of politicians trying to create false charges against Chief Murinye are alarming. Bogus investigations and intimidation tactics, including the involvement of a Bigadier General, are a clear attempt to silence him. Kudos to the police for refusing to be used in this witch-hunt.
Chief Murinye’s concerns about Riverton School’s impact on villagers are valid: why deprive cattle of grazing land, harm local schools, and hurt the community? He advocated for reasonable fees, not unfair treatment.
The media must verify facts before reporting, and social media should not peddle false information that harms individuals. Chief Murinye deserves protection, and Mutangira should apologise for his actions.
Let’s stand with Chief Murinye and uphold truth and justice.
For the avoidance of doubt chief Murinye runs his own transport business and does not need Mutangira’s millions to educate his children.
The minister of Masvingo Province clearly told the nation that the school registration was not in order. So it is clear that the chief was fighting illegally and is now the victim of powerful manipulating Mutangira.
We must stand with our traditional leaders.
