CHASE Africa, 25 years of supporting community healthcare and environmental activities across remote, rural parts of East Africa
9News Of The South) – CHASE Africa began life in 2000 planting trees in Kenya’s Great Rift Valley, promoting reforestation, water harvesting and fuel-efficient stoves enabling communities to maintain, and benefit, from the natural resources around them. Over time, it became clear that many women within the communities were facing wider challenges, including a lack
of access to healthcare and a high unmet need for family planning. This was leading to a cycle of poverty.
In 2012, CHASE Africa shifted its focus to support local partners across East Africa to improve community healthcare, provide health information, improve the rights of women and girls and remove barriers to family planning. With access to contraception, women and girls can take control of their own health, wellbeing and opportunities. Girls can complete their education, women can plan and space their pregnancies, leaving more time for work and income generating activities, as well as community governance and leadership. Globally, around 257 million women of reproductive age have an unmet need for rights-based, voluntary family planning (FP). – United Nations Population fund (2023)
To date CHASE Africa has:
• Delivered over 1,476,000 Primary Health care services
• Trained and supported over 500 health care providers
• Delivered over 605,700 family planning services
• Distributed over 4,766,000 condoms
In 2025, we are supporting 14 partners across Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda. We hope to continue growing and improving women’s access to healthcare and access to knowledge.
We have not lost sight of our original environmental focus. All the partners we support work in remote rural areas,
where lives and livelihoods are heavily dependent on natural resources.
“In parallel to their health programmes, our partners run a range of activities aiming to reduce environmental
degradation, protect biodiversity and promote human-wildlife co-existence, embracing a holistic approach.
