Charles Taylor Commences Prison Sentence In The UK

The convicted war criminal and former Liberian President Charles Taylor 65 is serving his 50-year jail term in Britain for war crimes and assisting rebels in the civil war which took place in Sierra Leone.

The war in Sierra Leone was from 1991 until 2002 and ended when British troops intervened.

Taylor arrived in the UK on October 15 and was immediately handed over to prison officials on landing.
In May 2012 Taylor was found guilty of committing war crimes and was sentenced by UN backed Special Court for Sierra Leone (SCSL).

Taylor was being held in The Hague for fear his trial might stir unrest in Sierra Leone.
In a statement, the SCSL confirmed Taylor had arrived in Britain “accompanied by Special Court detention and security officials”.

Taylor had appealed to the SCSL to have his location changed as he did not want to be imprisoned in Britain and preferred Rwanda as he would be close to his family.

His arrival comes after he sent a letter to the SCSL appealing for a change of location, not wanting to be imprisoned in the UK.

Taylor`s three page letter reads: “My name is now associated with horrendous atrocities.
“Prison inmates, whether from the region or not, are likely to be inclined to inflict their own brand of justice by attacking me.”

Taylor`s imprisonment is the first time a former national leader has been successfully charged for war crimes since the Second World War.
