WASHINGTON, D.C. (News of The South) — The glitz and glamour of the annual White House Correspondents’ Association (WHCA) dinner dissolved into terror Saturday night as a gunman attempted to storm the ballroom, forcing the emergency evacuation of President Donald Trump and senior administration officials.
The incident, which occurred at approximately 8:36 p.m. EDT, sent hundreds of journalists, celebrities, and politicians diving for cover under linen-draped tables as several rounds of gunfire echoed through the Washington Hilton.
The Breach
According to law enforcement officials, the suspect—identified as Cole Tomas Allen, 31, of Torrance, California—approached the main security screening area outside the International Ballroom. Armed with a shotgun, a handgun, and multiple knives, Allen reportedly rushed the magnetometer checkpoint.
When confronted by security, the suspect opened fire. One Secret Service agent was struck in the chest but was saved by a ballistic vest. Agents and Metropolitan Police officers swarmed the suspect within seconds, tackling him to the ground and taking him into custody.
Panic in the Ballroom
Inside the ballroom, the atmosphere shifted from festive to frantic in an instant. President Trump was seated on the dais, having just arrived for the first time since his return to office, when Secret Service agents suddenly rushed the stage.
Evacuation: Agents shielded the President with their bodies before whisking him and First Lady Melania Trump through a rear exit.
High-Level Security: Vice President JD Vance and members of the Cabinet were similarly hurried from the room as law enforcement officers with rifles drawn took up positions across the ballroom.
Witness Accounts: Attendees reported hearing five to eight muffled bangs followed by shouts of “Get down!” and “Active shooter!”
”It was a scene of total confusion,” said one journalist present. “One minute we were laughing at a comedy set, the next we were huddled under tables, not knowing if the shooter was inside the room.”
Investigation and Response
President Trump addressed the nation later that night from the White House, appearing uninjured but somber. He praised the “incredible bravery” of the Secret Service and described the suspect as a “lone wolf.”
”The vest did the job,” Trump said, referring to the wounded officer. “We are very lucky, but we are also very protected.”
Motive: Federal investigators are reviewing writings allegedly sent by Allen shortly before the attack, which referenced grievances against administration policies.
Charges: U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro announced that Allen will face multiple charges, including assault on a federal officer and using a firearm during a crime of violence.
Security Posture: In the wake of the attack, the President has renewed calls for the construction of a high-security ballroom within the White House complex. The WHCA has announced that the dinner will be rescheduled for a later date. For now, the Washington Hilton remains a crime scene as the FBI and Secret Service continue their forensic sweep.
