The third edition of the African Nations Championship is set to open this Saturday in South Africa at Cape Town stadium.
The theme for the tournament’s opening ceremony is “Celebrating Africa; A Place Where Champions Are Celebrated”. The opening game will be between the hosts South Africa and Mozambique.
The tournament, in which 16 African football teams are taking part, will run up to the first of February.
The tournament was initially scheduled to take place in Libya, but the north African country gave up the right to host the event because of the continuing political unrest.
The CHAN tournament is exclusively played by players who feature in domestic leagues of their respective countries.
Meanwhile football’s world governing body, FIFA, has granted “A” status to the tournament, meaning that matches played will now have full international status, and the results be considered towards team rankings and the players’ caps will be official.
