With the wake of Capital Hall corruption scandal in Malawi involving highest offices, Germany which is Malawi’s major western donor has cut its development assistance to Malawi accusing the abuse of office by Malawi President Joyce Banda`s government.
“Cash gate corruption scandal in Malawi is self explanatory that there is no leadership in the country and Joyce Banda`s administration is corrupt and selfish,” said a German Diplomat in Malawi.
“As donors we cannot be aiding thieves, the country lacks responsible leadership and the existing administration has shown no commitment to end the corruption cancer which has been promoted by the highest offices thus costing the poor nation,” he added.
In the same note, pressure is mounting on the Malawian President Joyce Banda and her administration to immediately resign for allegedly breaching the Malawian citizens’ trust over the recent cash-gate scandal.
A Malawian legal expert has expressed that, even though the constitution doesn’t provide ground for the presidential resignation, the fact that citizens have lost trust on their current government is the only ammunition left for the incumbent to resign and her administration to down tools.
“The relationship between citizens and the country leadership is bordered on trust but when that trust is breached or tempered with, the prudent thong for the president and his administration to do is to resign,” he said.
Reports by the government officials in the Finance department blaming the IT software Integrated Financial Management Information System for the fraud over looting of billions of kwacha has been widely criticized and dismissed with forensic auditors accrediting the software for tracing the involved culprits and suspects to the corruption scandal.
The Malawi’s Financial Intelligence Unit with the help of Malawi Reserve Bank are conducting investigations to the cash-gate scandal and some of the findings show the involvement of many senior government officials to the cash looting spree at the Capital Hall and many have their bank accounts frozen.
Many are expecting the arrival of the Malawian President Joyce Banda on Wednesday from a 3week visit to the United States where she has attended the united Nations General Assembly to answer question on the cash-gate scandal.
