Kampala. Regional leaders meeting today in the Angolan capital Luanda are expected to pass a raft of resolutions on Burundi which have been drafted by a ministerial meeting.

Foreign Affairs ministers, Defence and security from the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (IGCLR) have since May 12 been meeting to discuss different issues key of which is Burundi where a coup d’etat against the incumbent President Pierre Nkurunziza failed last week.

According to a source who attended the meeting, the ministers recommended to the regional leaders to urge the Burundian leadership not to avenge on those involved or perceived to have been involved in the attempted coup.
The meeting, which President Museveni is expected to attend, will also discuss the security situation in war-torn Central African Republic, DR Congo, Burundi and South Sudan.

Central African Republic degenerated to ethnic and religious violence after the Seleka rebels deposed President Francois Bozize’.
Different rebel groups also continue to haunt the people of eastern DR Congo while in South Sudan, President Salva Kiir and rebel commander Riek Machar have failed to agree on a peace deal despite several attempts.

The meeting is also expected to discuss the threat of terrorism in the region. In his maiden public speech in Burundi since returning to the country after a failed coup against his government last week, Burundi’s President Pierre Nkurunziza yesterday said he had spoken to Mr Museveni and his Kenyan counterpart Uhuru Kenyatta about security following a terror threat from al-Shabaab group.

Mr Nkurunziza, according to BBC, spoke briefly to reporters at the presidential palace in the capital Bujumbura but made no mention of the failed coup.
Uganda, Kenya and Burundi are major troop contributing countries to the African Union Mission in Somalia (Amisom).

Police last week alerted the country of an imminent terrorist attack after the al-Shabaab group posted a video warning that they will soon attack the country.
Meanwhile, 18 people appeared in court on charges of helping the coup bid in Burundi on Saturday.
The alleged ringleader is still on the run. Burundian activists have vowed to continue with mass protests against a third term bid.

Recommendations
-Unanimous condemnation of acts of violence by both the state and the population
-Condemned the coup as no longer an acceptable, unconstitutional means of resolving political issues
-Urged Burundi not to avenge on those involved or perceived to have been involved in the attempted coup
-Called for restoration of order and facilitation for the return of the displaced persons following the conflict
-Urged Burundi to defer elections to an unspecified time, to rebuild confidence and stability in the process and the country respectively. Respect the letter and spirit of the constitution.
