The first British national to contract Ebola arrived in North London on board a Royal Air Force jet on Sunday.
The man, a nurse named William, contracted the virus in Sierra Leone where he was volunteering at a clinic in the Kenema district.
On arrival in london William was transported via ambulance with police escort to an isolation unit at the Royal Free Hospital in north London.
The hospital has UK’S only high level isolation unit with a specially designed tent with controlled ventilation.
According to Dr Paul Cosford, director for health protection The Public Health England, control measures have been put in place to prevent the virus being transmitted to other staff and patients.
The deputy chief medical officer said: ” we have robust well developed and well tested NHS systems for managing unusual infections when they arise, supported by a wide range of experts.
“UK hospitals have a proven record of dealing with imported infectious diseases and this patient will be isolated and will receive the best care possible”.
There is currently no cure or vaccine for the deadly Ebola virus which can be contracted through contact with an infected person’s bodily fluids.
