(News of The South) – The British High Commission has approved US$54 million to support the agricultural sector in Mozambique over the next five years.

With more than 80 percent of its population dependent on agriculture for livelihood, Mozambique’s food security is extremely volatile.

“The funding will improve the involvement of the private sector in selected areas of agriculture to promote greater climate resistance.

In addition, the funding will stimulate growth in this sector and transform the economy of Mozambique,” said the British High Commission in a statement.

Market and household food supply are below average in areas affected by last year’s cyclone Idai and Kenneth respectively which has resulted in high prices of maize grain.
