Harare, Zimbabwe (News of the South)-British citizens have begun voting today in a referendum that will decide whether the country stays or leaves the regional European Union in a poll whose campaign has been vitriolic and even murderous.
Dubbed Brexit the referendum has revealed the existance of a big rift in the country as some sections have lambasted the EU as a parasitic body that has been laboring Britain more than the latter has gained.
This has been worsened by the Syrian conflict which has led to thousands of refugees fleeing into Europe with fears that they will eventually come into Britain.
The likelihood of Turkey, with more than 77 million population, joining the EU has also been harnessed as a fear factor driving the paranoid fear peddled by those advocating for Leave.
The other side has however been equally adamant citing economic perils that await the faded superpower if it exists the EU.
Many experts have however bemoaned the farcial nature of the campaigns citing the populism which has supplanted the need for arguments filled with substance.
International economic organisations such as the International Monetary Fund (IMF) have also weighed in with dire warnings to voters who may vote for exiting the bloc.
Final results from the polls are expected tomorrow according to the country’s Electoral Commission.
However live updates may reveal earlier the results when bigger electoral regions, from the 382 total, start announcing their votes.
