(News of The South) – Yesterday an eight year old boy from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) was put under quarantine after showing signs of Ebola.

The boy was in the company of his parents who were intercepted at Iponga as they were trying to evade Kaporo Immigration post on their way into Malawi.

According to Joshua Malango who is the ministry of Health and Population’s spokesperson, medical samples of the child were sent to Lilongwe for tests where it will be established if the child has the virus or not.

Karonga environmental officer Lewis Tukula said, “he has all the signs of the Ebola virus, he is vomiting, he has vomited six times, he has body weakness and high fever.”

A couple of weeks ago, the minister of Health and Population, Jappie Mhango stressed the need for the country to stay prepared for the Ebola virus.

The minister said the government was taking necessary safety precautions measures to avoid Ebola into entering Malawi.

“I told people when I went to Chitipa that we will destroy all the monkey bridges on unchartered routes so that people from the horn of Africa do not access the country through such routes,” said the minister.

Three weeks ago, a person died at Karonga District Hospital and the cause of death was suspected to having been of Ebola.
Regardless, Mhango has since insisted that Malawi has not yet registered any confirmed Ebola case.
