A 12 metre high Christmas tree, which is also six metres wide, has taken centre stage at the Airport Junction Mall. The colourful tree is also decorated with 16 000 bulbs of different colours and shapes.
Former vice president, Lt Gen. Mompati Merafhe said the tree would add vibrancy to the city. Lt Gen. Merafhe said this at the official lighting of the tree at the Airport Junction Mall on December 20. He said the Chrismas tree gesture by Limkokwing University of Creative Technology came at the right time when Batswana, like other people in the global village, were celebrating Christmas.
The former vice president commended Limkokwing for the tree, and the Christmas gifts given to children who came to see the official lighting. “If everyone in the country adopted the gesture of giving to the underprivileged, there will be no Motswana living in abject poverty, and others should emulate Limkokwing,” he said.
The deputy permanent secretary, Information and Broadcasting Services, Mr Mogomotsi Kaboeamodimo said the tree would make the city attractive to locals and visitors, adding that Batswana would not have to travel outside the country to see such beauty.
Limkokwing Univerisity of Creative Technology, public relations officer, Ms Mercy Thebe highlighted that over the years they have realised that there was lack of an outstanding feature in the city, and as such they hoped that the tree would bring unforgettable moments to the city. Ms Thebe said the tree would not only change the Airport Junction Mall outlook, but Botswana as a whole.
Among attendants was Ms Aobakwe Gaonosi who said it is her first time to see a tree of that magnitude and beauty. “My child is soo excited she thinks it is Christmas already.” Ms Mmapula Papha said it was a wonderful event to witness, adding that it was made more exciting by the Christmas gifts children recieved. She also added that it was her first time to see such a big Christmas tree.
A little girl, Darne Kingeeson said she had fun and I was also thankful for the Christmas presents. ENDS
