News of the South HARARE – MDC Alliance Deputy Chairperson Tendai Biti said the outgoing British Ambassador Catriona Laing was a disaster, accusing her of being a card-carrying member of Zanu PF who had no right to the diplomatic title.
Biti in his Twitter post expressed what seemed like relief that Laing has left the country for Nigeria.
Catriona Laing has finally left Zim we wish her luck in Nigeria. As we welcome the new UK ambassador, we trust that the British Embassy will once again be the home of the Magna Carta, the home for reform, fairness and the rule of law, not tin pots, despots and scarfs,” said Biti.
In response to comments where he was asked to clarify his statements, Biti showed no remorse in castigating the British envoy.
“As an individual, she was an absolute disaster and a sad representative of the British government. Treated the average Zimbabwean as a native, she thought Zimbabwe in 2018 was Southern Rhodesia in 1931,” he lashed out.
The former finance minister went further to say Laing did not deserve to be an ambassador.
“She was partisan, was a card-carrying member of an authoritarian regime. She brought British diplomacy to disrepute,” Biti said.
Laing came to Zimbabwe in 2014 in 2014 and her mission was supposed to end in 2017 but it is reported she had an unfinished project.
