Harare, Zimbabwe (News of the South)-The Zimbabwe Association of Clinical Biochemistry (ZACB) has dissuaded the public against the wanton taking of microbial drugs which it says hastens process of drug resistance in bodies.

The recommendations and specifications of use are contained in a new publication delivered by Sekesai Zinyowera an official in the Ministry of Health and Child Care during the ongoing ZACB 2016 National Annual Workshop in Harare, Zimbabwe.

Speaking at the event the biochemist said wanton and unregulated use of microbial drugs commonly called antibiotics was rampant in the country.

“There is a lack of proper diagnosis, water and environmental contamination and inappropriate use of anti-biotics which all ultimately lead to resistance by the body”.

“All this is necessitated by the proliferation of anti-biotics which are given out through back-door channels such as by nurse aides and some pharmacies which sell them without prescriptions”, she said.

“Anti-biotics should only be given out when a person has produced a prescription”, she added.

Towards the curtailing of this the Ministry of Health is set to produce a National Action Plan concerning anti-microbials as a part also of requirements by the World Health Health organisation by 2017.
