Press Release Issued By Volta Citizen Union
The attention of the people of the Volta region has been drawn to a news item which is making waves on various news media including social media to the effect that the Vice-President, His Excellency Paa Kwesi Amissah Arthur has labeled the people of the Volta Region of “lacking reasoning and are laughable”. With the headline: “NDC to boil As Amissah Arthur Declares Ambition for 2020 and slams Volta Youth” the story highlighted events at Cape Coast on the evening of Friday, 11th of December, at the Pempamsie Hotel organized by the Vice-President at which platform he declared his ambition for 2020 and slammed the Volta Region Youth for calling him incompetent.

While we are not against the Vice- President thoughtlessly declaring to NDC executives that he will be flagbearer for the party in 2020 when President Mahama has not yet won 2016 elections, we find it uncouth and an insult on the dignity of the people of the Volta Region for the sitting Vice-President of the land to refer to a section of Ghanaians as “laughable and lacking reasoning”. If really the Vice-President in prematurely declaring his ambition for 2020 stooped so low to make such derogatory remarks on the Youth of Volta region at the Pempamsie Hotel, Cape Coast, we demand an unqualified apology from the Vice-President, Paa Kwesi Amissah Arthur immediately or we take swift action.
We wish to reiterate to Mr. Amissah Arthur, that just as many Ghanaians have seen him struggled to impress anyone, the Volta Youth for Development who lobbied for their favorite Doe Adjaho for running mate are entitled to their opinion on national issues and their rights as protected by the constitution must be respected. It is rather unreasonable for someone who supposed to be the Vice-President of the country to suggest that sections of the population are laughable and lack reasoning.
What lacks reasoning than a running-mate for elections to be held in 2016 declaring his lofty ambition to be President in 2021? Ghana is yet to see such premature declaration from a sitting Vice-President and this must be condemned by all even at the NDC leadership level as it could create unnecessary anxiety among most government appointees who may also be bidding their chances of future leadership of the party. In an attempt to steal a false start on other potential candidates, we urge the Vice-President to be guarded in attacking and bringing the image of the people of Volta into public ridicule.
He should be mindful that the Volta Region has supported the NDC since formation and the regions has always been loyal to the party in giving the most votes in every elections. Besides, the Volta Youth for Development who referred to him as very incompetent and called for his change were only sharing and echoing the views of a nation that sees him as adding no value to the governance of the country. Even that, Paa Kwesi Amissah Arthur ought to have at least reasoned that not all people in the Volta region are sympathizers of the NDC that he has “immaturely prematurely” declared his ambition to lead in 2020. In doing this, Amissah Arthur has rather demonstrated yet again his ineptitude, immaturity and lack of political wisdom.
We are therefore by this press release demanding Amissah Arthur to withdraw and apologize unreservedly to the good people of Volta region and Ghanaians for his attack on the Youth of the region else we shall also declare him persona non grata to the region. Just as he has prematurely declared his ambition to be flagbearer for 2020 when he is yet to contribute anything meaningful to the Mahama-led administration’s quest to win power in 2016, the people of Volta will also not forgive the NDC for the impracticable and unrealistic ambition of Amissah Arthur. If the VEEP fails to meet our request, it may get to that point when the NDC will have to choose between the Volta region and Paa Kwesi Amissah Arthur.
