Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. (News of The South) – United States’ Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, has castigated South Africa’s prospects of expropriation of land without compensation.

“South Africa is debating an amendment to permit the expropriation of private property without compensation, that would be disastrous for that economy and the South African people.

A strong rule of law, respect for property rights, regulation that encourages investment is what is needed,” said Pompeo.

South Africa’s ruling party, the African National Congress (ANC) is proposing a new amendment on land expropriation without compensation that will see decision making shifting from the country’s courts to the minister of Land Reform.

ANC’s Mathole Motshekga, who is leading an ad hoc committee on land reform, said that if the courts are to determine compensation it will take another 25 or 50 years to sort out land reform.
White South Africans, who make up less than 10 per cent of the population still own most of the country’s land, more than two decades after the end of the Apartheid regime, which made it very difficult for the Black population, which makes up for the majority to own land.
