(News of The South) Zimbabwe’s state owned airline Air Zimbabwe has announced that it will now be charging foreign nationals in foreign currency.
Air Zimbabwe said that local Zimbabweans were exempted from paying in foreign currency but could do so if they wanted.
“Please be advised that Air Zimbabwe can only sell tickets to Zimbabwean residents in local currency, however, willing residents can pay for their tickets in foreign currency.
“Therefore, with immediate effect, the following are required to pay their air tickets in foreign currency including domestic travel. Holders of foreign passports or foreign national IDs, Embassies, International Organisations, Non-Governmental Organisations and residents whose flights are originating from outside Zimbabwe,” read the official statement from Air Zimbabwe.
Air Zimbabwe is in a huge financial debt of over US$300 million to make matters worse the state owned airline now has only one plane in operation a Boeing 767-200ER.
The airline is currently serving two countries South Africa and Tanzania and the rest are domestic routes.
Newly appointed Air Zimbabwe chairperson who is also the former minister of finance Patrick Chinamasa is seemingly finding it difficult to turn Air Zimbabwe’s tide down.
