Makhudu Sefara, editor of a South African newspaper The Star has urged African journalists to defend their leaders from continuous prosecution and harassment by the International Criminal Court (ICC).

Makhudu said this when he addressed Zimbabwean Journalists in Harare on Thursday.

He said African media practitioners must candidly tell the African story by defending the continent and its leaders from the ICC.

“As African media practitioners, we must defend our leaders, the media must stand as an obligation to justice and truth.

“Our leaders must be safe and we must not sabotage their security. Journalism is a tool to enhance democracy, ensure human rights and is a force for the good,” said Mr. Makhudu.

Mr. Makhudu also urged media practitioners not to be apologetic when campaigning for repealing of harsh laws.

Meanwhile, a Netherlands based journalist Stefan Verwer urged Zimbabwean journalists to act as protective agency and to be watchdogs of their leaders and societies.
