Today, October 25, we warmly welcome the SADC member states and other progressive organisations like us joining Zimbabweans in collectively voicing disapproval of the unjustified economic sanctions imposed unfairly on Zimbabwe by the Western countries, led by the United States of America and the European Union two decades ago.
From our view point the sanctions on Zimbabwe are Illegal, unjustified and unwarranted.
We understand for almost two decades Zimbabwe has been under the following Sanctions
■ ZIDERA [2001] which limits Zim’s access to lines of credit re the IMF/WB and other IFI’s.
■Then 2003 Office of Foreign Assets and Control [OFAC] which “designates” Zim individuals and entities and prohibits transactions
As we are aware these Sanctions have placed an embargo on the GoZ restricting them from accessing multilateral donor support and essential bank loans not to mention balance support payments which could have developed infrastructure in Zimbabwe.
The sanctions have deprived the people of Zimbabwe an opportunity to live within normal standards. The sanctions have created deplorable standards of living for people leading to undeserved loss of life. Our response has informed us that over the last 10 years many Zimbabweans have died due to curable diseases as a result of declining public service infrastructure and poor healthcare. All which could have been avoided through equal access to global finance through private or public institutions.
For this reason as an African Diaspora Organisations, we join hands today with SADC, GoZ and the faithful people of Zimbabwe in supporting a campaign for the lifting of Sanctions on Zimbabwe.
We wish the people of Zimbabwe success in their quest to find internal solutions that can move the country forward in achieving Vision 2030 aspirations.
Thank you
