African Chess tourney ends in style
Windhoek, Namibia. (News of The South) – Surreal, spontaneous and rapturous this is how the just ended 2019 African Youth Chess Championships have been described by many contestants which were being held at the Windhoek Country Club Resort and Casino.
The tournament which started on the 16th of December and ended yesterday was attended by 16 African countries and 249 participants with age groups that started from the Under-08 category to the U-18 category.
Top 3 chess players per age categories walked away with silverware. South Africa collected the most accolades bagging 10 medals.
“I would really want to appeal to the various governments to continue giving the support that chess really needs.
We as the Africa Chess Confederation are really indebted to the participants. We are looking forward to even greater events in the future,” said Kezzie Msukwa secretary-general of the African Chess Confederation.
The tournament winners have also managed to book themselves a place at the World Youth U14, U16, U18 Championships 2020 Mamaia in Romania which will take place from the 7th to the 20th of September as well as the World Cadet U8, U10, U12 Championships 2020 Batumi in Georgia from the 18th to the 31st of October.

3. Algeria 6 medals (2 Gold, 4 Silver)
4. Zambia 2 medals (1 Gold, 1 Silver)
5. Botswana 4 medals (1 Gold, 3 Bronze)
6. Angola 4 medals (1 Gold, 3 Bronze)
7. Namibia 1 medal (1 Gold)
8. Madagascar 1 medal (1 silver)
9. Nigeria 1 medal (1 Bronze)
