Harare, Zimbabwe (News Of The South) – Harare, the vibrant capital of Zimbabwe, is a city with immense potential. The numerous bustling markets, rich history, and warm people are the defining characteristics. However, like many rapidly growing urban centres, Harare faces challenges in maintaining its cleanliness and providing sufficient employment opportunities for unemployed residents. This article explores how a concerted effort towards a cleaner city can directly contribute to job creation and foster a more prosperous future for all Hararians.

Often overlooked, the cleanliness of a city has a profound impact on the economic and social well-being. A clean and well-maintained environment attracts investment, boosts tourism, and improves the overall quality of life for residents. Conversely, a city plagued by litter, inadequate waste management, and neglected public spaces can deter investment, negatively impact public health, and diminish civic pride. When people see rubbish all over they too join in and add their rubbish but if there was no rubbish on the streets and bins are within reach people will use the bins to get rid of their rubbish. Imagine what the young children are learning when they see rubbish all over, they too participate in public littering and they grow up with that mentality that one can simply drop their rubbish on the streets.

Creating Jobs Through a Cleaner Harare:
A focused initiative to create a cleaner Harare offers numerous avenues for job creation across various sectors which are:
– Waste Management and Recycling: Implementing efficient waste collection systems, establishing recycling programs, and promoting waste sorting will create jobs for waste collectors, sorters, recyclers, and operators of recycling facilities. This will not only clean up the city but also contribute to a circular economy, generating valuable resources from waste.
– Street Cleaning and Maintenance: Employing individuals dedicated to street sweeping, maintaining public parks and gardens, and cleaning public spaces will create direct employment opportunities and contribute to a more aesthetically pleasing environment.
– Environmental Education and Awareness: Investing in public awareness campaigns and educational programs about waste management, environmental conservation, and the importance of a clean cty will require the hiring of educators, communicators, and community organizers.
– Green Spaces Development: Creating and maintaining green spaces, parks, and urban gardens will generate jobs for landscapers, gardeners, and horticulturalists, enhancing the city’s beauty and providing recreational areas for residents.
– Manufacturing and Supporting Industries: Increased demand for waste management equipment, recycling machinery, and cleaning supplies will stimulate the growth of local manufacturing and related industries, creating further employment opportunities.
– Tourism and Hospitality: A cleaner and more attractive Harare will undoubtedly boost tourism. This will lead to increased demand for hospitality services, including hotels, restaurants, and tour operators, creating more jobs in these sectors.
– Informal Sector Integration: Supporting and formalizing the informal waste collection and recycling sector can provide a sustainable livelihood for many individuals currently working in this area.
Strategies for a Cleaner and Job-Rich Harare:
Achieving a cleaner Harare and maximizing job creation requires a multi-faceted approach involving collaboration between various stakeholders:
– Strong Government Leadership: The city council and national government must demonstrate strong commitment and allocate adequate resources for waste management and environmental initiatives.

– Community Engagement: Engaging residents in waste management programs, promoting responsible waste disposal, and fostering a sense of ownership over public spaces is crucial for long-term success.
– Investment in Infrastructure: Upgrading waste collection infrastructure, investing in modern waste management technologies, and establishing recycling facilities are essential.
– Public Awareness Campaigns: Launching comprehensive public awareness campaigns to educate residents about waste management practices, the importance of cleanliness, and the environmental and economic benefits of a clean city.
– Public-Private Partnerships: Collaborating with private sector companies for waste collection, recycling, and other environmental services can bring in expertise and resources.
– Promoting Green Businesses: Supporting the growth of businesses involved in waste management, recycling, and environmental services through incentives and favourable policies.
– Creating a Regulatory Framework: Implementing and enforcing clear regulations and penalties for littering and improper waste disposal.
– Skills Development and Training: Providing training and skills development opportunities for individuals to work in the waste management and environmental sectors.

A Shared Responsibility, a Shared Future:
Creating a cleaner Harare is not just the responsibility of the government or city council; it is a shared responsibility that requires the active participation of every resident, business owner, and community organization. By working together, we can transform Harare into a cleaner, healthier, and more prosperous city.
Investing in a cleaner Harare is an investment in its people. It is an investment in creating meaningful employment opportunities, improving public health, and enhancing the overall quality of life. As Harare strives for a brighter future, a commitment to cleanliness will undoubtedly pave the way for a more vibrant and job-rich city for all its residents. Let us work together to make this vision a reality. More bins should be made available on the streets and these should be emptied regularly to maintain good standards.
