Following the announcement of the new cabinet by Zimbabwe`s President Robert Mugabe, Zimbabwean artists have expressed delight and are optimistic of a bright future following their recent separation from the education sector which they said was an unequal union.
Previously arts fell under the Education Sports, Arts and Culture Ministry that was headed by former Minister David Coltart, this resulted in less attention being given to the arts.
“We are very excited about the latest developments and we do hope that the incoming Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture will deal with the problems that we have been facing.
“Now that we have our own ministry we expect to see the arts sector getting financial support from the government, we are hoping for the best,” said Bizzy Dee, a local music producer.
Willis Wataffi, an accomplished artist, believes the appointment of Andrew Langa and Tabeth Kanengoni-Malinga as Minister and Deputy Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture Ministry is an opportunity for artists to be recognised.
The crooner also believes that this development will result in a viable industry which will put Zimbabwean art on the map.
“I must applaud the government that they have finally heard our cry, now we have an opportunity to be more influential.”
“This development does not only mean better productions but it also means a better Zimbabwe with well packaged art,” he said.
Zimbabwe is a land full of diverse cultures and is talent endowed but the most disturbing fact was that its arts sector was lagging behind.
The country has scored little success since independence in art and for the fist time in the history of the country the forgotten sector has attained liberation.
Zimbabwean artists were at the end of the world bottom as they were not a priority when it came to the nation`s budgetary matters.
