No Mercy For Protesters: Angolan Police
Angolan police have warned they will not have mercy on the anti government youth protestors who plan to take to the streets in the capital Luanda on Thursday in efforts to topple Angolan President Jose Eduardo dos Santos.
“We will repress, I repeat, vehemently repress, all acts that go against order and public security, and we will use force if it is necessary,” Aristofanes dos Santos, spokesman for the Angolan police said on state television.
Authorities in Angola have been discouraged from using force by Amnesty International who advised that force could be used only if it became necessary..
Protests have been held against President Jose Eduardo Dos Santos by the Angolan Revolutionary Movement.
Police spokesman Dos Santos said demonstrators were taking to the streets in protests because of fear of slogans that incite violence.
“Note that in the planned demonstration they (the activists) will distribute posters that incite violence. They have been duly warned by the police chief – we are alert and any violation of the norm will be severely punished,” he added.
The arrest on September 12 of Nito Alves, a 17-year-old activist, who is alleged to have printed protest slogans which accused police of defaming the President made Angolans rise up in protests.
The Angolan Revolutionary Movement accuses President Dos Santos of mismanaging Angola’s oil revenues.
Jose Eduardo dos Santos is accused of ignoring the plight of the poor and spearheading the mismanagement of Angola`s oil revenue.
