Gaborone, Botswana (News of The South) – In a landmark decision for African athletics, Botswana has been awarded the hosting rights for the 2026 World Athletics Relays. The prestigious event will take place in Gaborone on May 2nd and 3rd, 2026, marking the first time the biennial global championship will be held on the African continent. It also opens up avenues for employment creation in Botswana and business opportunities for other countries around Botswana.
The announcement was made by World Athletics President Sebastian Coe following the 237th World Athletics Council Meeting in Nanjing, China. Coe expressed his delight at Botswana’s commitment to athletics, highlighting the nation’s growing expertise in hosting major sporting events.
“I am delighted that Botswana’s commitment to athletics, both through their elite athletes and their event hosting capabilities, has led them to hosting the World Athletics Relays next year,” said Coe. “This is the fourth World Championship event Africa has staged over the last decade, and we are seeing a real increase in experience, expertise and skills.”
Botswana’s Minister of Sport and Arts, Jacob Kelebeng, also shared his excitement, stating, “We have done it.” He congratulated the Botswana Athletics Association (BAA) for this significant achievement, which marks a major milestone for the country’s sporting landscape.
The hosting of the World Athletics Relays coincides with Botswana’s 60th Independence celebrations in 2026, adding an extra layer of significance to the event. The country’s strong tradition in athletics, particularly in the men’s 4x400m relay, makes it a fitting host for this global showcase of relay excellence.
The World Athletics Relays bring together the world’s top athletes to compete in a variety of relay events, including the 4x100m, 4x400m, and mixed relays. The event is a thrilling spectacle of speed, teamwork, and precision, and its arrival in Botswana is sure to inspire a new generation of athletes across the continent.
While Botswana will host the 2026 edition, the World Athletics Council also announced that Nassau, The Bahamas, will host the 2028 World Athletics Relays. Additionally, Brazil will host the 2026 World Athletics Race Walking Team Championships in Brasília on April 12th, 2026.
The decision to award the 2026 World Athletics Relays to Botswana underscores the growing strength and influence of African athletics on the global stage. It promises to be a memorable event, showcasing the talent of athletes from around the world and inspiring a passion for sport across the African continent.
Just a few days ago Zimbabwe’s Sports Minister was elected as President of the International Olympic Committee, another historic event as she became the first female as well as first African to be appointed in that position. Southern Africa is leading in World sports games, its long overdue.
