Johannesburg – Julius Malema South African opposition politician is under investigation for assault and for breaking a fellow driver’s car window in an alleged road rage incident, a police spokesman said Wednesday.

Malema had an altercation on Tuesday night with a man who complained about the driving of the firebrand leader’s S-Class Mercedes Benz in the northern city of Polokwane, Hangwani Mulaudzi.

“Three guys came out of (Malema’s) car, grabbed him, and then he claims that Mr Malema joined the other three guys, slapped him in the face, and also damaged his vehicle,” said Mulaudzi.

A case of assault is believed to have been filed by the complainant who complained of damage to his property.

“We are still investigating,” said Mulaudzi.

The expelled youth leader of the ruling African National Congress, now a prominent opposition leader, was arrested last year for driving 215 kilometres (134 miles) an hour in an area with a speed limit of 120 kilometres per hour.

Malema faces other charges of corruption, money laundering and racketeering for allegedly arranging lucrative government contracts for cronies in return for kickbacks.

He was declared insolvent by the court early February for failure to submit tax returns between 2006 and 2010.

Malema was once a top supporter President Jacob Zuma.
