(News of The South) – Shirley Ann Jackson is an African American physicist and also the first African American woman to serve as president at a top- ranked research university, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in New York.

She is the first African American woman to have earned a doctorate at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and also the second African American woman in the US to earn a doctorate in Physics.

The Call Waiting and Caller Id feature, the portable fax machine and the touch tone telephones all came to fruition due to the important research of Dr Shirley Jackson.
Her Caller ID feature has enabled people to screen, known, unknown or unwanted phone calls.
On her Call Waiting feature people can now be notified of an incoming call while on another ongoing call.

The best thing about this feature is that while receiving a call, that call will not block the incoming one.

Thanks to Dr Jackson people no longer miss important calls they were expecting while they are on the phone receiving another call.
Dr Jackson currently serves as president at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, is married to a physicist and has one son.
