Harare, Zimbabwe. (News of The South) -Ask yourself do you know where the 100 percent human hair that you buy and put on your head comes from.
This is not a call to discourage or judge anyone who decides to put on 100 percent human hair on their head. It is an attempt to make sure that everyone is aware of the risks that come with putting someone else’s DNA on top of your own. It is also meant to help African women love their hair and appreciate it.
Is looking like a white person the definition of beauty? This is the question I have been asking around and I got responses like, “no because they are actually trying to look more like us with their plastic surgeries and no because black don’t crack.”
After asking this question I went on to ask the next question which was, “is wearing weaves and wigs the same as people who bleach their skin in an effort to look more like the white person?”
A neighbour who preferred anonymity said, “I do not wear a wig as an effort to look like the white person, I do it because going to do my hair is very expensive these days so having a wig I can throw on every time I want to go out is a life saver”
Although people had very good reasons for using the white Peoples’ hair, I wondered if they knew the risks that come with this mixture of DNA and most of them were shocked and actually clueless of the effects.
Zimbabweans Doctor Guramatunhu said, “When the hair sweats the DNA of the original owner gets into your body.”
This gets extremely dangerous if the original owner had some sort of terminal disease or was mentally ill.
Cleopatra a Zimbabwean singer said, “There is a theory that human hair comes from horses’ tails.”
The singer said she was not happy and was terrified at the thought of having a dead person or mad person’s hair on her head.
She also went on to say, “Natural hair is actually a very good look, it is something that I’m a 100 percent for and people look really beautiful with their natural hair. I am very proud of who I am because at the moment I am keeping my natural hair.”
The singer concluded by saying, “I feel like having fake hair or weaves is an effort to look very western and it is like we are living according to their standards of beauty. So they have defined what beauty is for us. Having borrowed hair is like having borrowed beauty, I do not think it is cool and I think it is the same as skin bleaching.”
Most men interviewed on what they thought about wigs told News of The South that they were totally against it saying their women looked beautiful outside the house but look terrible at home and if wigs were not there then maybe the wives would look after their natural hair. Others are not happy about the amount of money their women demand for human hair and weaves.
