The transition from childhood to adulthood is received by some youths as the time to show off their dinking prowesses. Whilst there‘re some youths who are upright and forthright who don’t take alcohol, there is a sizeable number of our youths who think that when they turn 16 – it is the right time for them to drink alcohol with hardly a care. They start giving themselves drinking pseudo names such as the party animals, bite a pint squad and beer worshippers. They will start boasting of knocking back several litres of cider and loads of cans of beer. They will declare arrogantly of their conquest of Vodka, whisky, champagne and cocktails.
To really get a picture of how our future – our youths are turning into drinking monsters and are slowly being devoured by alcohol, just go to those Night Clubs which operate round the clock on a Wednesday night when beer is slightly cheaper. What happens there beggars belief. You would find the youths on the bottle from six in the evening to six the following day – cheering each other to soldier on drinking by competing in drinking games. They will tell you that they are normal teenagers enjoying the privileges of being adults – and they will tell you that beers make them feel confident, outstanding and bubbly. When they finally get drunk – there comes the problem of antisocial behavior. Brawls and public nonsense are a common phenomenon. Some even end up spending the night in a cell after being whisked away by the arm of the law for their own safety and the safety of others.
Some even end up in hospitals with dislocated hips, wounds and binge related ailments such as liver and kidney problems .All this will impact heavily on the NHS which will end up using substantial amounts of money in treating binge related diseases among our youths. Likewise many youths end up ruining their prospects of getting a career. It is true that United Kingdom respects the aspect of being self and is tolerant of how people want to live their lives but if our youths are not encouraged to drink responsible the future of the nation will be compromised – today’s youths are tomorrow’s leaders. Can they be entrepreneurs when they are innovative binge drinkers? It is very disheartening to note that some of the youths whom we are supposed to pass on the baton to are already a liability to their parents and the nation.
The youths should know that turning sixteen is not a safe passage to play reckless games with their health through binge drinking and doing drugs. They should know that beer is perpetual, new brands are being made and they should drink it responsibly in order to become effective future leaders. As the price of beer remains affordable it is a sure case that without a proper responsible drinking culture in place some of our youths will cut their lives short through alcohol abuse. A concerted effort from all the stakeholders who have something to with the young generation is needed so that, Jane and Richard might see that binge drinking is a killer – a monster devouring and sucking out life from them.
