Gaborone, Botswana – Botswana’s High Court yesterday dismissed the case lobbied by Botswana’s main opposition party, the Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC) against the ruling Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) for electoral fraud.
The case which was petitioned by the UDC a couple of weeks ago was dismissed due to the plaintiff (UDC)’s failure to provide verifying affidavits and complying with the Court rules.
“It cannot be deduced that the people or institutions which allegedly committed the corrupt and illegal practises are election or polling agents.
As for the BDP, names are mentioned but none of them are said to be election or polling agents,” said Justice Mercy Garekwe during the Court verdict.
The BDP was re-elected in October’s national elections and acquired 38 seats whilst the UDC managed 15 seats.
An investigation commissioned by the UDC alleged that thousands of voters were allowed to cast ballots twice in different constituencies and that election officials and voters were bribed.
